TWO INCREDIBLE COURSES For members of the Devil's Pulpit Golf Association, the experience begins as they drive past rolling countryside and into the Niagara Escarpment to play the award-winning course of their choosing: either Devil's Pulpit or Devil's Paintbrush. The Pulpit is a spectacular earth sculpture that pushes the envelope of golf design with its strategic options, multi-tiered fairways and challenging greens. In naming Devil's Pulpit Canada's Best New Course of 1991, Golf Digest said: "It all works as a scenic wonder and as a test of golf." The Paintbrush has all the features of British links courses including mounding, sod-wall bunkers, rock fences, blind shots and knee-deep fescue rough that billows in the ever-present breezes. It too was honoured by Golf Digest, as Canada's Best New Course for 1992. Although uncompromising in its standards, the club has a relaxed atmosphere; its professional service and many amenities surpass expectations. U.S. golf course architect Rees Jones has described the Devil's Pulpit Golf Association as "the best two-course golf club in the world." The courses were designed by Dr. Michael Hurdzan and Dana Fry. The Devil's Pulpit course, built on 315 acres, is named for an Indian legend at the nearby Credit River, while the Devil's Paintbrush, on 164 acres three miles east, is named for an indigenous wildflower that grows in abundance on the property. The Devil's Pulpit Golf Association, founded on February 14, 1988, and developed by Chris Haney and Scott Abbott of Trivial Pursuit fame, functions as a non-profit organization. For the complete story about the creation of the Devil's Pulpit, which officially opened on July 1, 1990, you may wish to order your own copy of Devil's Pulpit, The First Decade, a hard-cover book published on the occasion of the club's 10th anniversary.
